Low Back Pain

• Failed Back Syndrome: This is pain that persists after surgical correction.

• Lumbar Neuritis: This pain may be caused by bulging lumbar discs leaking inflammatory substances on the nerve, and/or direct compression of the nerve by a herniated disc.

• Lumbar Spondylosis: This is arthritic changes to the smaller joints in the spine. Results in low back pain radiating into the buttocks.

• Fibromyalgia: A condition affecting the muscles. Pain may be felt in the extremities and back.

• Shingles and Post herpetic Neuralgia: A condition caused from re-activation of the chicken pox virus in elderly adults.

Treatments for Low Back Pain

• Failed Back Syndrome: Treatments for this condition include identifying the cause of the pain and treating with injection therapy, medications and occasionally spinal cord stimulation as a permanent solution. At times intrathecal therapy is needed.

• Lumbar Neuritis: Treatments for this condition may include transforaminal epidural steroid injections, medication therapy and when needed surgical referral.

• Lumbar Spondylosis: Treatments include a series of injections and radiofrequency lesion of the affected nerves providing relief for months to years.

• Fibromyalgia: There are new medications designed specifically for this condition. Treatments include eliminating other causes of the pain and using medications along with a specific limited exercise regimen.

• Shingles and Post herpetic Neuralgia: Treatment includes the use of antiviral medications and epidural injections targeted to the site of flare-up. The sooner this is treated the shorter the course of the outbreak.
